Learning need not be confined to a room with lots of books. At TG's the children love learning outdoors in a magical garden!
Trevor Kee is the wizard who made TG's beautiful gardens a reality. His magical hands have made every inch of the garden a beautiful and sustainable play space. Trevor's wish is for everyone on the planet to plant one seedling a day. That way our planet would be a much better environment to live in. We hope our children will be inspired by the beautiful gardens they have to learn in and take on board this inspiring message to care for the natural spaces in their community.

Trevor has been working in Uralla on recycling an old sandpit. It is going to be opened up and converted to a little grotto with a small play space and even a little fire pit for the children. Winter has come and nibbled away some of the plants but Trevor is ready to liven it up with some colourful plants!
He is also kept busy in Armidale where he is reinforcing the planting. The beautiful thing about learning with nature is how it keeps changing (and thus keeps Trevor on his toes!). Many of the plantings in the gardens are edible. There are strawberries for ground covers, juicy plum trees and olive trees with their massive crowns. The children go through the processes of pickling the olives to eat, which is a really fun activity as they can experience for themselves the entire process from planting to harvesting to pickling and finally to eating…which some of them love and some just run for the hills! He is also giving the humble car park a makeover. There are going to be plants covering the fences so that when the children and families enter the preschool they have lush greenery and happy plants to welcome them. It is a complete sensory and constant learning experience with the birds and bees and colours and smells. Nature is a wonderful way to start the day!
At the Riverbreeze centre in Wauchope there is a massive area and Trevor has a million ideas zipping through his head, ranging from having TG's own swim school to nature playgrounds. For the children, every day is a little adventure and TG's wants to provide as much natural spaces as possible for little explorers to have imaginary adventures in. Each little space is optimised for learning – give Trevor a corner and he will put in a little sandpit and an area where he can create movement with little low stone walls. Wonderful smelling plants like oregano, mint and rosemary are planted so the children can smell and taste these wonderful creations of nature. This works well on children's natural curiosity to grab things and use their senses to learn...and decide if they are going to give each thing their royal stamp of approval or to be banished forever to the dungeons!

TG's is focused on developing the whole child and encouraging learning through play, fun and exploration...in other words, it is FUN to get down and dirty with Mother Nature! We want to give children a real environment that can be explored with all the senses. When children are confined to the four walls of a room or a virtual reality world that is not real, they become automatons. It is important to nurture children who are loving, respectful of people and nature, compassionate and loving fun and eager to learn every moment. We want children at TG's to learn to think, to explore and to create. They are the future leaders of our fragile planet, and it is in their hands to create a better and more sustainable planet to live in. What is key is the children are doing this together, with their peers, their educators, their families and also the communities they live in. They learn from brilliant role models around them and understand they each have an impact on another with their behaviour and their gifts.
With Trevor's imaginative creativity, TG's is not just growing in terms of numbers or brick-and-concrete, it is very much alive with plants and little creepy-crawlies. We all share this one precious planet and we are nurturing our children to fill it with love and compassion. The children are living this lesson every single day at TG's as they play in the gardens and learn with Mother Nature.
